A BRIEF HISTORY OF URBAN GROOVE

The UGDN was founded by Joel Tan Kwok Liang, in mid 2003. At that time it was just Joel and a bunch of friends who had the same passion for hip hop, notably bboying at that time. That passion of each individual coupled with their respect and loyalty towards Joel's vision and ambition led him to materialize the concept of a fully fledged dance academy focused on just the street dance styles. But setting something like that was no easy matter for the team at that time. They had very little experience when it came to running something of that magnitude in a region where the general mindset was still on the conservative side.

Joel thought that in order to make it work, a program had to be devised to progressively teach students in a systematic way. At the same time he also wanted it to be unique as in it had to keep the real essence of street dance in its program. He therefore created a syllabus of modules, which would be used in a class format to effectively teach students hip hop, funk and other new styles. The syllabus was made up of technical modules with appropriate terminology, technical variations and also sequences, which could be cut and paste to create choreographed routines. The syllabus was then divided into different levels based of difficulty of technique and complexity of sequences. Joel knew that street dance and hip hop would always face new emerging styles. He therefore made the module in such a way that it would always be adaptable to the changing of times. At this point the whole system has been extremely successful in Malaysia and the UGDN has 5 branches all over KL and in one in three other states, which includes Penang, Negeri Sembilan and Perak.

The UGDN also has another sub company, the UG productions, which focuses on organizing all of the events for UG such as the bboy league, funk festival, true to the elements camp, awards party and street dance championship.
