KUALA LUMPUR: STPM school-leavers who applied for places in public universities will know by Wednesday if they are among the 40,116 who were successful.
According to Higher Education Ministry sources, a total of 68,110 students had applied for places in public universities last year.
Earlier, Higher Education Minister Datuk Seri Mohamed Khaled Nordin said the new Higher Education Department director-general Prof Datuk Dr Radin Umar Radin Sohadi would announce the intake next week.
He said this after officiating the launch of The International Centre for Education in Islamic Finance’s (INCEIF) Masters in Islamic Finance.
INCEIF is the only university in the world that is dedicated to education in Islamic finance and banking.
“The demand for professionals in Islamic finance is great,” said Khaled.
He pointed out that a recent study showed that Islamic banks in Gulf Cooperation Council countries need to fill 30,000 new positions over the next decade.
Currently, 3,778 students are studying courses related to Islamic banking and finance at IPTAs. According to Bank Negara projections, about 11,600 trained professionals in Islamic finance are needed by 2010.
